Family Counseling Helping Troubled Teens at Mt Carmel
Mount Carmel Youth Ranch is dedicated to reuniting the troubled teen back with his family. This is one of the main goals of Mount Carmel Youth Ranch. We here at Mount Carmel realize that there can be a lot of tension in a family while trying to deal with a boy. This page will explain how we go about family counseling.
Horse Riding
Once a troubled teen is admitted to Mount Carmel, our staff lets the counselor know the date of arrival of the troubled teen. The counselor tries to meet with the parents on the day of arrival if they bring their son. Otherwise, the counselors will initiate email/phone visits to get a family history of the situation. Our counselors will also set up every other week family conference calls for the family therapy. If possible they will set a date for the family to come to Mount Carmel Youth Ranch in 3 months to attend a family therapy session as well.
Once the troubled teen is on the ranch and in a good space, our counselors do an individual psychological intake and set the student's goals with him. A copy of that treatment plan will be sent to parent's for review and signature. The original will be placed in the chart. A discharge plan will also be developed at this time to begin the process of achieving the discharge goal.
The counseling staff will then see the student once a week for 45 minutes to do the individual intense therapy based on his issues and needs.
The student will be involved in the group therapy twice a week - one being a processing group on anger management, self-esteem, team work, communication skills, self-discovery, life skills and coping skills. The other group will utilize equine assisted therapy to help internalize the processing group based on the same topic that week.
Our counselors will continue to be in contact with a parent every 2 weeks for family therapy but also send a monthly report to them regarding their son's progress. Our counselors are accessible via email at anytime for questions or concerns.
The goals and treatment plan will be reviewed monthly with student and staff to measure progress. The goal sheets will be rewritten every 3 months to validate progress. Parents will also have a goal sheet to fill out at 3 month intervals.

When a family comes to visit their son, we will do a parent session, an equine assisted therapy activity, and then a family session to review what they have learned and processed. We will also use this time to deal with any issues that arise when they are out with their son on an outing and review and validate the progress they see in each other.
When the student reaches the top two levels in the bunkhouse they will continue with the discharge planning, putting community support systems in place for the student upon arrival home with the parents assistance, and finish up any family therapy issues necessary to increase the success of the student's return home.
