Summer Programs
At Mt. Carmel Youth Ranch, the leading troubled teen camp, we strive for excellence in education, attitude, responsible work ethic, and service. We hope to instill into the youth a sense of belonging to something bigger than themselves so that they realize a life of giving rather than taking will ultimately make them complete. It is our goal to teach respect for the dignity of the person and a responsibility toward others.
Mount Carmel Youth Ranch is a facility for the whole person. At Mount Carmel Youth Ranch, we believe that life is sacred and thus what we put into or take away from our mind, heart, and body must be justified.
Cattle Roundup
As the troubled teen enters our initial summer program he is introduced to a way of living that resembles the farm lifestyle. They live in a log house and cook their food in a log kitchen. They also take care of ranch animals including calves, pigs, chickens, dogs and cats. They learn how to irrigate crops, and assist in the harvest of hay and corn. The boys will also learn things about range management, natural spring development, and living the “simple” way of life. During these lifestyle changes the horse plays an important role in therapy.
Cowboy on Horse
Several staff members here at Mount Carmel are certified in equine therapy. The horse is used to determine and assist the boys in recognizing their problems and how to deal with those problems. As a boy develops a relationship with his new environment and becomes more knowledgeable and responsible, he will be allowed to experience more of the daily chores and events that make ranch life a maturing and challenging life experience. Horses play an integral role in traditional ranch life. Mount Carmel has 30 head of horses for ranching purposes. Like the boys, these horses come from many backgrounds. They are primarily Quarter Horses, with some Arabian, Paint Horse and mustang breeding represented as well. It is amazing how quickly the boys will pick out a favorite horse among the herd. The old saying goes that “the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man”, and is proven true here at troubled teen camp, MTC.
Since Mount Carmel is not a “Dude” Ranch, we do not recommend that boys ride our horses while they make their initial adjustment to the program. Trust, work ethic, self motivation, and a sense of responsibility are key factors in determining the boy’s progress as they become more closely associated with the horse. Riding a horse has many responsibilities attached to it; successful horsemanship requires many hours of study and a desire to learn about horses.
The troubled teens will be sleeping out under the night skies at times and learning from some of the best trail bosses in the business. This includes horsemanship, breaking and training colts, and range management which entails cattle management around environmental considerations.
The maintaining and building of improvements such as water lines, fences, etc., are an essential part of the experience. Mount Carmel Youth Ranch offers summer programs to young men ages 12-17 during the months of May till September (or when school starts). This program can be individualized to the specific needs of your troubled teen. The boy can come for one month or all 4 months. 90% of the boys who come for the summer program have had such dramatic positive changes in behavior that they stay for the 18 month program. There is no formal schooling involved in the summer program.
